"extremely mediocre debut albums with Cream..." Much love and respect to Sister Tharpe but pastor, you need to come to Jesus! Lord, forgive him, he knows not what he speaks! ππΌπ
I think this may be the strangest segue I have ever read: "...and they can explain why Tom Waits can help you appreciate Chopin. And this brings me to theology."
But, as usual, another masterful lesson by the great Chris Nye! Keep doing what you're doing brother.
Haha thank you Dave. βStrangeβ is a goal I have for my writing. I had a writing mentor once tell me the only writing that will ever matter in the long run will have some level of βweirdβ in it. The Bible might be the best example of weird literature.
Now Iβm feeling gratitude for the folks who introduced me to the musical and theological good stuff.
Sometimes they were scathing critics of pop tastes (and my tastes). Does tastemaking usually involve some tastebreaking, too?
I knew a bibliophile who browsed his friendsβ bookcases and sighed, βI donβt see any... do you have any *good* books?β Not my idea of a great conversation starter. But heβs actually a very persuasive tastemaker. On a subsequent visit, his friends were eager to show him some new, substantive books theyβd boughtβand really enjoyed.
Thanks for this Chris. I definitely have some reading to do and I appreciate that youβve left a trail to follow. By the way, at one time I had the Violent Femmes on my playlist too.

What would I name a band that is bland, fat, predictable, and all white?

βTastebreakingβ is so brilliant, Alan. Such a great word! I think youβre on to something thank you for adding your wisdom here π
